Everyone is here on earth to experience a lesson. Whether we like it or not, nature compels us to move through life. We are not on earth to 'scrape through' and will our time away. In fact, we live so that the universe can express itself through us.
Here is the other side of the story.
The 'lessons' on this earth is not within your locus of control. You decided it before you got born. Here is where it gets interesting.
You, as a spiritual entity is unable to decide your life mission on this planet. You are not in control of long term coincidences.
You, however are able to control your day to day life experiences. You can regulate all short term coincidences on this earth.
This is your locus of control.
